Albufera (or s’Albufera) is one of the most important wetlands in the Western Mediterranean and the first protected area in the Balearic Islands (1988). The numerous habitats host a great biodiversity, including many species of birds, fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and countless invertebrates as well as plants and fungi.
The natural park has an interpretive centre and excellent facilities for birding: observatories, platforms and signposted footpaths allow access to the most interesting spots of the protected area.
Albufera is the main hotspot for birds in Mallorca and many can be seen, depending on the season. Some of the highlights are the Red-knobbed coot, Purple swamphen, Marbled duck, Moustached warbler, Red-crested pochard, Greater flamingo, Kentish plover, Black-winged stilt, Black-crowned night heron, Little bittern and Glossy ibis. Nightingale, Purple and Squacco herons are summer visitors.
During the migration we can find numerous waders and all kinds of migratory birds.
The tour to Albufera can be half a day (4 hours) or a full day (8 hours). The half-day tour can be combined with Son Bosc, Son Real or Albufereta to make a full-day tour.
Bring binoculars and, if you have one, a camera (a spotting scope is optional). We recommend comfortable shoes, enough water, and some food. Depending on the weather: cap, sunscreen, insect repellent, warm clothing, and a raincoat.
