Salobrar de Campos and Cap Salines

Birding Tour

The kingdom of flamingos

In the south of Mallorca, the Salobrar de Campos (literally, the saline land of Campos town), a man-made salt exploitation, is a very important site for birds and the second largest wetland on the island. The saltpans host an important population of Greater flamingo, and many species of waders breed in the wetland or as a stopover.

Cap Salines, the southernmost tip of Mallorca, is our next stop. Seawatching can result in good sightings. During the migration periods, many birds arrive or leave the island.

Main species

The saltpans host an important population of Greater flamingo, and many species of waders breed in the wetland (Avocet, Kentish and Little ringed plovers, Black-winged stilt, Common redshank) or as a stopover (Curlew sandpiper, Ruff, Dunlin, Little stint, etc.). Marsh harrier, Yellow wagtail and Shelduck also inhabit the area.

Seawatching can result in good sightings of the endemic Balearic shearwater, Scopoli’s shearwater, Mediterranean shag and audouin’s and Yellow legged gulls. During the migration periods, many birds arrive or leave the island: Bee-eater, Marsh harrier, Honey buzzard, Booted eagle, Black kite, etc.

On land we may find Woodchat shrike, Hoopoe, Thekla’s lark, Red-legged partridge, Stone-curlew and Mediterranean flycatcher, among others.
