At the northernmost end of the island, any nature lover cannot miss the Formentor peninsula, a hotspot for migratory birds. The sea cliffs of the northern coast offer dramatic seascapes in contrast with the more gentle slopes and beaches of the Pollenca bay.
Each corner of the peninsula has its own natural interest, whether birds, landscape or the numerous endemic plants. The tour involves little walking as the birding spots are accessible by car. Departing from Port de Pollença, we stop at several locations on the way to and back from the Formentor lighthouse.
Between April and October, Formentor hosts a large population of Eleonora’s falcon. The elusive Balearic warbler also lives in the area, together with Peregrine, Blue-rock thrush, Crag martin and Pallid swift.
In the woodlands, we can find Crossbills, Firecrests and Mediterranean flycatcher, all three a unique Balearic subspecies.
Formentor can be combined with another half-day tour to Albufereta or Albufera to make a full-day tour.
Bring binoculars and, if you have one, a camera (a spotting scope is optional). We recommend comfortable shoes, enough water, and some food. Depending on the weather: cap, sunscreen, insect repellent, warm clothing, and a raincoat.
